Osteoarthritis in Veterinary Medicine

Sodium pentosan polysulphate is marketed and distributed worldwide in vertrinary medicine under the trade name Cartrophen VetŠ by ARTHROPHARM. The therapeutic activity of the product arises from the action of sodium pentosan polysulphate on the underlying pathological processes of osteoarthritis and results in analgesic and regenerative effects. Cartrophen VetŠ is indicated for the treatment of lameness and the pain of osteoarthritis (non-infectious arthrosis) and related musculoskeletal disorders in dogs.

Cartrophen VetŠ possesses disease modifying and anti-arthritic chondroprotective properties. The pentosan polysulfate sodium in Cartrophen VetŠ has been shown to:

  • Stimulate chondrocytes which synthesize the cartilage matrix;
  • Stimulate synoviocyte biosynthesis of hyaluronic acid;
  • Inhibit and modulate pro-inflammatory mediators which are implicated in the degradation of cartilage matrix components;
  • Mobilize thrombi and fibrin deposits in synovial tissues and subchondral blood vessels;
  • Mobilize lipids and cholesterol in synovial and subchondral blood vessels;
